What’s in a (street) name?
“When South Brooklyn developed, like other areas, it borrowed the names of other cities to give names to its own streets. In that manner the names Altoona, Amberley, Ardmore, Bangor, Bucyrus, Canova, Crestline, Galion, Creston, Elston, Laverne, Memphis, Pensycola, Roanoke, Saratoga, Spokane, Tampa, Tarlton, Wichita, Woburn, Silverdale and Vandalia were given.
It was also common to use Indian names even though the location had no relation to the location of the tribe. Pensacola, Roanoke, Spokane, Tampa and Wichita are such names. Treadway Ave. is one of the Cleveland streets named for a local great man. Francis W. Treadway of Cleveland was Lieutenant Governor of Ohio. His older brother Lyman Treadway was also a man of considerable wealth and influence.”
